About Alex
Alex has been an Account Manager with IRP for just over 3 years. His role involves recruiting and retaining candidates across the Manufacturing, Electrical and Warehousing industries, as well as looking after the Injury Management Portfolio and leading on Business Development tasks.
Before recruitment, Alex worked in Sales for Telstra as well as a Business Development Manager for a photocopier dealership in Newcastle, NSW. This was his first role as an Account Manager, where he had ownership of both the sales process as well as the ongoing support for a wide range of clients. Alex really enjoyed the aspect of building relationships and supporting his clients past the sale, something that provided him with good experience for the recruitment world.
At this stage, Alex’s image of “Recruitment” was simply someone who sent messages on LinkedIn about jobs you were not interested in or qualified for. This began to change when he came across an Account Manager role with IRP. This job appealed to him as it was more of a hands-on role, allowing him to get out to site, and take on other responsibilities. After meeting Pete and Michelle and hearing more about how IRP operated, his perception of Recruitment had changed for good.
Alex had previously studied Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Newcastle. Naturally he began to help with a few compensation claims and associated processes. After a few months, it was decided that Alex’s role would formally include some work in this space. He now manages all things relative to injuries, including Workers Compensation Claims, Return to Work Plans, and Preventative Safety Measures for IRP and our clients.
Recently there has been more opportunity for Alex to support with the Business Development side of the company, which requires him to deal with incoming queries, meet clients on site, and understand the people and culture behind the business.
“Developing meaningful relationships with our clients is a top priority. The number one thing when it comes to retention is knowing the people behind the business and understanding the type of workers who are going to fit well there.”
Q&A
When I'm not busy with work...
I’m a very active person – I always have to be doing something. Whether that’s going to the beach for the day, watching the footy or horse races with mates, or going to the gym, I like to be kept busy. I’m also a massive foodie, any excuse to get to a good café, restaurant or wine bar and I’m there.
What do you love about working in the recruitment industry?
I genuinely enjoy when you give someone an opportunity and see them succeed in it. I enjoy building relationships with all the different candidates and clients too. On the client side, it’s very satisfying when they come to me with a problem and I solve it, genuinely making a difference to their business.
Any success stories from your time working in this industry?
There has been a few, majority of the feel-good ones for me are from candidates who are struggling to get a chance, or to get on the path they want to for whatever reason, and you manage to help them make that happen – then support them through. There is nothing better than receiving a call or text with a genuine thank you from these people… makes it all worth it!
Past that, one of the biggest successes for me has been my personal self-development. I’ve been here for 3 years, and I’ve had professional growth I never could have imagined prior to working here. I feel this job and environment has allowed me to grow as a person and given me a consistent sense of purpose. I’ve always had drive and ambition; this job has supported that whilst opening me up to numerous new opportunities. It’s been a huge contributor to a lot of positive personal changes, and I am super happy to be comfortable and on a career path I enjoy.
