BlueScope Case Study

About BlueScope

BlueScope Steel is a leading steel supplier and manufacturer for the building and construction industries, delivering high-quality steel products across Australia, New Zealand, Asia and North America.

IRP has worked with BlueScope’s Wangara branch, also known as Fielders, for the past 9 years. Fielders is an industry leader in the design, manufacturing and innovation of steel roofing, cladding and rainwater goods.

We help BlueScope to recruit and retain employees across a variety of roles for their site in Wangara. Roles include Forklift Operators, Sheetmetal Workers, Machine Operators, Customer Service Representatives and Storespeople, to name a few.

The Challenge

Prior to working with IRP, BlueScope’s recruitment process was lengthy and time-consuming, particularly for their Managers. For each role that needed to be filled, the Operations Manager, Asnus Smith, would find himself sifting through resumes, spending a lot of time reviewing past work history, skills and experience to decide on who to shortlist and interview.

Asnus says “Anyone can send in a resume”, but that on its own is little help, especially for a busy Management Team juggling multiple priorities.

Managers would then conduct site tours and interviews, bringing potential candidates in, showing them around, introducing them to the different teams and trying to gauge their suitability and fit. This part of the recruitment process is important, but it’s also very time consuming, sometimes taking up half the day.

Not all site interviews and tours led to a successful new hire. Many that came through, even after a positive phone screen, presented poorly, displayed the wrong attitude, or were not the right cultural fit.

Once someone was selected, and the candidate accepted, Managers would also have to conduct and facilitate the inductions. These take about 4 – 6 hours depending on the role.

The Solution

Since working with IRP, BlueScope's hiring process has evolved to be streamlined, efficient and effective with over 80% of new hires being retained. IRP takes care of and manages the entire recruitment process for BlueScope. This includes marketing programs specially tailored to working at the Wangara operation, advertising and running targeted campaigns to our database, reviewing resumes, conducting phone screenings and completing site interviews and tours with shortlisted candidates.

For successful candidates, this is the first time a Manager will invest time in the recruiting process.

Asnus’s role has gone from conducting every aspect of the recruitment process, to now meeting a pre-screened and compliance verified candidate towards the end of the recruiting process. The only thing Asnus needs to do is decide whether he agrees they’ll be a good fit for the role. In fact, after working successfully with IRP for so many years, he trusts us to do the job and can now confidently tell his IRP Account Manager, Brad, what roles he needs to fill and then we do all of the work finding the right person.

Not only do we carefully choose someone who will be good at the job, we are also dedicated to finding a person who will fit in well with the team and has the right attitude.

Over a number of years, Asnus has seen first-hand our focus on ‘soft skills’ and creating the right culture.

“IRP has played a huge part in shaping the culture here at BlueScope by bringing in people that fit in with the teams and have the right attitude for the job”

IRP also supports BlueScope with the inductions necessary for each role. We organise where they will take place and guide the candidates through them, ensuring they understand everything and are prepared before they begin in their role. We then provide the staff with all of the PPE and uniforms they need and make sure they are all set for their first day on site.

As part of our candidate management, we check in frequently throughout their placement. We understand that the initial placement of a candidate is only the first step in the recruitment process. We want to ensure that the employee is happy in their role and that BlueScope is satisfied with them too. If there are ever any problems with staff, we work through and resolve these issues with BlueScope and make this process as smooth as possible for everyone involved.

The clear and frequent communication between IRP and BlueScope ensures that we are all shooting towards the same goal.

The Results

The success of IRP’s partnership with BlueScope is underscored and ultimately measured by the hiring success rate over the longer term.

Since the beginning of our partnership in 2015, IRP has supported BlueScope with the employment, training and onboarding of 537 candidates.

So far this year, we have employed 35 new starters across a variety of roles including Forklift Loaders, Customer Service Officers, Sheetmetal Workers, Storespeople and more. The average tenure has been 16.7 weeks with 25 out of the 35 still working there under IRP.

Of the 10 employees no longer employed by IRP, 2 were taken on as permanent staff by BlueScope and the other 8 voluntarily resigned. This indicates that every candidate placed by IRP so far this year has been suitable and has met BlueScope’s expectations.

For Asnus, there’s another significant benefit, “What IRP have succeeded in doing is selecting and recruiting candidates who fit and will enhance our culture.”

With our full support and encouragement, BlueScope periodically offer full time roles where they become available. This year, 16 of IRP’s candidates have now been successfully transitioned to permanent employment with BlueScope. For IRP, this is the sort of event that perfectly illustrates our intent, purpose and wish for clients.

From BlueScope’s perspective, Asnus points out that:

“It’s very important for us to create stability and an environment where employees can grow, develop new skills and build a career. There are many great IRP employees and when we have a full time opening, we look to transition the people who want that career, have proven themselves and will continue to add to our culture and values.”

It’s close to the perfect working partnership, and as we approach 10 years working together, that’s as strong as ever. It really helps that IRP and BlueScope share many of the same values and business objectives.

We work together on recruiting, retention, operational excellence and employee development. These are all areas that with continued focus and effort, result in better business performance, happier employees and a very fulfilling and enjoyable working relationship.

Henry Ford once said, “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.” And we’d add that it’s way more enjoyable too!
