You choose when you want to work. If you want a few weeks or even months off between assignments, that's up to you. You might choose an assignment that starts in the cool of the morning and finishes early afternoon so you can spend the rest of the day at the beach.   Perhaps working nights will fit in better with your family commitments, while starting late in the day will allow you to have that early game of golf or go shopping. 

If long-term commitment is not your strong point, short term assignments provide the freedom to try out a variety of assignments and duties whilst developing your skill base and experiences.
